For those of you who are unfamiliar with decorative painting (also referred to as tole painting), I will explain. An artist will do a painting. It can be any subject, any style any medium, on any surface
in short, ANYTHING that the artist desires. Some artists (like me) may do realistic paintings of animals, flowers, birds, still life, landscapes, fruit, people, etc. Other artists use their imaginations to create
well
anything their imagination comes up with - whimsical Santas and elves, tiny creatures or birds peeping out from behind a beautiful flower, a flamboyant cook to paint on your favorite apron, Christmas tree decorations
anything on any surface - from realistic to whimsical and anything in between.
Then we make up a pattern packet that includes painting instructions detailing how we created the painting - techniques, medium/s used, colours used, the painting surface, etc., colour photo/s of the painting, and a line drawing of the design. Depending on your level of painting skills, you can follow the instructions exactly or you can use the design as a starting point and put some of yourself into the painting. You could even change mediums if you have enough knowledge about mediums and colour.
All of my patterns are painted with acrylic paint and all of the pattern packets contain detailed instructions that are easy to read and understand
some have step by step colour diagrams. All of the bird patterns contain a section on "tips for painting realistic birds". All of my new large flower patterns include step-by-step instructions for painting flowers with a wet-on-wet technique. I take great care to simplify the painting steps as much as possible so that everyone can succeed, and you can e-mail me at any time if you have questions when you are painting one of my patterns.
Be sure to check out my techniques book "A Tapestry of Tole Painting" which has over 200 pages of information that can be used as a reference guide by the beginner to the advanced decorative painter for years to come. It is published in a small, unique format that can fit easily into your painting bag.
